MayDay Parade and Festival
This one is, undoubtedly, one of the most popular festivals Minnesota has to offer. If you are local to this beloved state, you’re almost sure to have attended at least once before! But if you haven’t? Well then there has never been a better time than your retirement in Minnesota, to experience this festival!
This one occurs in Minneapolis every year on the first Sunday of May, and has been celebrated for more than four decades now! The main attraction of this one? Ten feet tall hand-made puppets and masks, live music and performances, parading the streets. These artists, as well as the loving surrounding community, spend the entire month prior to the festival creating these puppets and masks.
Even if this may not seem to be quite “your thing”, it is certainly an experience to check off the retirement bucket list.
Lumberjack Days Festival
For more than eight decades, this traditional community festival has been celebrated in Minnesota. Every summer, the town of Stillwater showcases it’s beloved heritage as a logging town. Take the grandchildren, and relish in the many activities offered at this classic ol’ festival.
You or the grandchildren should most definitely participate in the Downhill Derby or the fishing contests if you’re brave enough! This festival is nearly a week’s fill of different exciting events, every single day. Everything from boat cruises, to pickle ball tournaments and lumberjack demonstrations, to Yoga and Bingo in the Park. Top off the amazing week with live music and fireworks over the river.
You will not believe how easy it is for every type of person to find enjoyment in this festival. So pack up your things and head on over to the festival and enjoy your retirement!
New Ulm’s Oktoberfest
If you are unable to head over to Germany for this year’s traditional Octoberfest, we’ve got the next best thing. New Ulm, Minnesota’s “Oktoberfest”. This is definitely one to add, and check off, that retirement bucket list. This may not be Germany itself, but this beautiful quaint town was settled by Germans, and named after a German City. So close enough!
This exciting fest is a two-part party, celebrating for two weekends out of October. The festival has everything from public tours of New Ulm’s many historical monuments, to German-style polka and live bands. Don’t forget your tour to the Schell’s Brewery- the 2nd longest and continuously owned and family-operated brewery in the nation. Go get your taste of a family-owned, German-style lager as a retirement gift to yourself.
Ely Winter Festival
Now that we’ve showcased some of the warmer festivities, let’s get into the reality of Minnesota- the winter and snow! Easily one of the more popular festivals in Minnesota is the Ely Winter Festival, in Ely, MN. This yearly event boasts all of the best of winter activities.
Here you’ll find everything from Amateur snow carving contests, snow sculpting contests, and iceskating, to learning how to make your own classic pastries. There is certainly more to offer than just these events- but see for yourself, next February once you are settled into your retirement!
